Conference Name Beginning Farmer Training in Central Wyoming - Our Pilot Year

Joanne Slingerland and Ethan Page

Summary

Central Wyoming College launched its pilot beginning farmer training program and farm incubator in the spring of 2021 - the only one of its kind in the state. With intense community interest in and demand for locally produced food, the timing was right to bring new farmers into Central Wyoming’s expanding local food system. Wyoming is a challenging place to farm. High elevations,100 day growing seasons, virtually no topsoil and cycles of drought would make anyone think twice about farming here. Accelerated climate change is only adding to the difficulty of producing food in Wyoming. We’ll present the unique farming practices we’re teaching our beginning farmers and how they can be successful in extreme conditions. We will share information on what has worked, what was challenging, lessons learned from project proposal to implementation and hear from some of our beginning farmers.
