Southern Extension Economics Committee Papers Series Assisting Farmers and Ranchers During Economic Downturns

Summary
The Southern Extension Economics Committee has written a series of papers assisting farmers and ranchers in better managing their farm business through this period of profitability and liquidity problems. The papers address concerns for the diverse Southern agricultural economy – row crops, livestock and dairy, and specialty crop agriculture.
The topics in the paper series include:
• Comparison of current macroeconomic conditions with the 1980’s farm financial crisis
• Current market outlook for Southern crops and livestock
• Importance of trade and the farm economy
• Management considerations through times of profitability and liquidity challenges
• Management considerations for alternative row crops, livestock and specialty crop enterprises
• Managing livestock and dairy farms in down cycles and the drought sales of livestock
• Managing labor during down cycles and changing regulations
• Helping farmers work with their lenders in good and bad farm economies and how to obtain an FSA loan guarantee
• Knowing when to retire from farming, understanding the implications of retiring vs. bankruptcy, and how to transfer the family farm to the next generation

This poster highlights the papers to increase awareness of the resources available to help managers improve profitability and liquidity. These resources will benefit Extension specialists, agents and risk management professionals with concepts applicable nationwide.
