Summary

During 2007-8 Oregon State University Extension Service completed a Cooperative Agreement funded by USDA-RMA under their Commodity Partnership Program. The Oregon CattlemanĀ“s Association was directly involved in planning and promoting our "Succession Planning for Ranching Families" project. A series of two half-day workshops were offered at five locations covering most cattle producing areas of Oregon. Based on our experience from these workshops, a DVD multimedia tutorial was created that offered a "ReaderĀ“s Digest" condensed version of the 8 hours of workshop material presented in live seminars.

A unique feature of the DVD is that it combines an example, dramatized scenario of a ranching family as it struggles with the challenges of planning their ranch succession. This scenario is accompanied by a financial analysis of their future prospects, and their situation is referred to by most of the technical experts or presenters who are included in the DVD.

The DVD presenters were, for the most part, also presenters in the live seminars in the winter of 2008. A benefit of this consistency is that users who want more in-depth information can refer back to the associated website which contains streaming videos and Power-Point outlines from the live seminars as well as references to other succession planning materials

The DVD tutorial has several programmed stops during which users are encouraged to complete activities that are seen as crucial to the process of completing a succession plan. By the time of the conference an evaluation survey will have been completed.
