Summary

The "Big Questions and Innovative Solutions in Land Management" Extension outreach meetings addressed financial and legal issues for agricultural operations that manage or lease land to sustain risk from economic and regulatory forces effectively. This meeting series focused on developing skills to analyze financial trends, effective communication practices, and understanding the implications of legal forces impacting lease contracts and operation transitions. As part of the 2023 outreach, the meeting series was piloted as a fee-based workshop in six locations across Nebraska with 187 participants.

The educational objectives achieved by this program include: developing financial analysis skills to evaluate economic forces impacting their land asset; effective communication and negotiation skills to manage inherent risk; and developing the business acumen to successfully navigate complex legal challenges in agricultural leases or land succession. Engagement and outreach for this meeting series included in-person/hybrid meetings approximately three hours in length to allow for adequate interaction between workshop attendees and the instructors. The target audience for this project had beginning, retiring, transitioning, and women producers and agribusiness professionals across Nebraska. Archived programs were made accessible via the Center for Agricultural Profitability's website at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

In the evaluation presented to program participants (N=187, n=119), 63.6 percent responded to a pre and post-workshop survey to rate change in understanding using a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high). Program topics included with ratings: financial issues impacting agricultural land - increase 1.24 (2.52 pre to 3.76 post); communication strategies for proper asset management - increase 0.95 (3.08 pre to 4.03 post); and analyzing legal risk impacting farm or ranchland - increase 1.38 (2.11 pre to 3.49 post).
