Conference Name Climate Stress & Grief: Building Awareness and Risk Management Strategies for Ag Professionals & Producers

Maud Powell

Summary

This session will offer a brief introduction to the concepts of climate stress and grief and a new educational program designed to help producers identify and manage climate stress and grief.

The rapid acceleration of climate change is bringing new human risks to producers related to their mental health and emotional well-being. Agricultural service providers are also experiencing greater demands to provide support in the wake of increasingly frequent extreme weather events. Research shows that people who increase their awareness of and talk about climate stress and grief are more resilient, likely to take action, and have a better quality of life.

The presenter will share the collaborative design process of the Climate Stress and Grief curriculum, which was developed in partnership with Oregon State University, American Farmland Trust, Rogue Farm Corps, and the Western Region Agricultural Stress Assistance Program. The team also conducted in-depth interviews with producer collaborators to design the curriculum. During the session, the program will be explained and evaluation data from the pilot sessions will be presented.
