Conference Name Codling Moth Mapping Project in Green Bluff

Tammy Wilson

Summary

In the summer of 2025, 55 pheromone traps were deployed in homeowners apple trees across the Green Bluff region, an agro-tourism area north of Spokane County (an area of ~10 square miles). By season’s end, these traps captured 2,453 codling moths, highlighting the pest pressure in local orchards. Through funding from the ERME Codling Moth Grant, we provided homeowners with comprehensive education on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including monitoring techniques, pheromone-based mating disruption, and judicious insecticide use.

By adopting these practices, we hope homeowners will increase their IPM to reduce pest outbreaks and improve fruit quality. One of the challenges has been getting homeowners to attend educational meetings. We are planning on having free tree cutting demonstrations this spring as well as mailing out additional flyers on IPM.

We will be conducting the trapping study again, in the summer of 2026, to see if our educational efforts have made a difference.
