Developing Networks to Reduce Risk
New Jersey farmers experience a wide array of needs, whether new or experienced, or farming in urban or rural areas. The one thing they do have in common is that they all require a support network that allows them to better manage risk. Such network needs to include other growers but also professional agencies, organizations and businesses within the agriculture sector to provide them with the support and resources they may need. Therefore, the Networks to Reduce Risk program was developed, and it was modeled after Annie’s Project. The program features a webinar series focusing on the five types of risk management and taught by industry and government agency professionals. They include lecture recordings, resources, assignments, and discussion groups. Additionally, it offers four field trips to sites relevant to different aspects of risk management, such as food aggregators, value added product creation, and equipment safety. Field trips proved to provide opportunities for participants to expand their knowledge on risk management topics relevant to their operations and broaden their networks and support each other thus, strengthening their ability to manage risks in the future. The broad diversity of participants allowed for the integration of different perspectives and identifying the different needs in terms of risk management.
