Pesticides are a management tool used by producers to overcome pests and diseases that threaten the profitability and viability of Hawaii's $563 million farming and ranching industries. Improper pesticide handling and application increases production, legal, and human risks, and can also invalidate crop and livestock insurance policies.
Hawaii’s farmers and ranchers are a diverse group of underserved producers and many lack understanding of proper pesticide use. In particular, they are not familiar with responsibilities under the 2015 Federal Worker Protection Standard (WPS), which aims to reduce pesticide poisonings and injuries among agricultural workers and pesticide handlers.
We highlight project tools and show how our multi-pronged strategy of workshops, webinars, field days and farm visits have increased Extension agents and producers' knowledge and understanding of sprayer calibration, pesticide calculations, WPS, record keeping, pesticide safety, respirator fit testing, and the role of crop insurance.
