Summary

Ohio State University Extension uses on-farm research as an education tool to help producers manage risk and improve decisions about practices and technology. Since 2017, the OSU Extension Digital Ag Team has partnered with farmers to test local, farmer-driven questions using consistent on-farm trial methods. From 2017 to 2025, the program completed 1,536 trials in 70 Ohio counties. Results are shared annually through the eFields summary report, with about 17,000 printed and electronic copies distributed each year.

In 2024, the team surveyed producers and Extension educators to document program reach, educator engagement, and producer outcomes tied to risk management. Measures included awareness of eFields, changes in use of research-based information, and farm decisions influenced by the report.

Results showed both a need for broader awareness and strong outcomes among users. About one-third of respondents sought the report each year, while about one-third reported no knowledge of the program. Among those familiar with eFields, nearly half reported increased use of on-farm research-based information after engaging with the report. Producer actions reflected risk management results. About half reported they were considering changes in production practices, and many had already made changes. About 40% reported they were considering new technology adoption based on report findings, and 27% reported they had already invested in new or improved technology.

For educators working with producers, these results support three next steps: expand county-based research groups, use producer focus groups to document longer-term outcomes, and deliver educator in-service training on trial interpretation and decision support.
