Meeting the needs of Ohio farm management education through collaborative teaching

Summary
Over the past decade many University Extension structures have adjusted to meet the challenges of reduced funding for faculty and staff. In some states the result has been an increased emphasis on state or regional specialists with reduction of county positions. In other states, county educators are now expected to develop an area of expertise and work closely with other educators to serve clientele outside their county lines. Ohio State University Extension county educators have worked together as the Ohio Ag Manager team to develop Farm Management Seminar Series throughout the state. These programs have focused on developing a basic and intermediate knowledge of financial, marketing, human resources and legal risk.
In 2016 three series were held in Ohio (Darke, Fulton and Wayne Counties) with a total of 110 participants. The Dark and Wayne County sites utilized technology to share speakers for some components of the program as they are 200 miles apart. The series ranged from 4 to 5 nights and focused on record keeping, balance sheet, developing a farm business plan, farm transition, agricultural law, grain marketing and crop insurance.
The success of these programs inspired additional programs in 2017. Four farm management series were offered with 83 participants. The series ranged from 3 to 6 nights depending upon the location. Evaluation results show that participants increased knowledge across all farm management topic areas in all risk areas. Team members shared resources for evaluations, press releases, registration brochures, etc. to aid in efficiency for program development.
