Conference Name Growing New Farmers in the Southeast

Nikki Seibert

Summary

Lowcountry Local First is working hard to reduce risks and increase opportunities for farmers in the Southeast through their Growing New Farmers Program. As the only organization in South Carolina providing farm apprenticeship, farm incubation, and land matching services, LLF is working hard to pioneer risk management training opportunities in the area. Programs are geared towards addressing both production and business issues facing both new and existing farmers. The training, networking, and listserv services are open to all farmers but have a strong focus on small-mid sized farms interested in utilizing sustainable growing methods.

To date the program has provided apprenticeship to over 95 individuals, farm incubation for 6 businesses, and informal "Growers Group" trainings for 100+ farmers a year. From 2011-2013 the program was a partner on the SC New and Beginning Farmers statewide program to provide apprenticeship and training opportunities for participants.

The LLF Director of Sustainable Agriculture, who has spearheaded the development and implementation of these programs, will share best practices, lessons learned and advice for both agricultural professionals and producers.
