Summary

The demanding nature of work makes farming a stressful occupation with higher death rates, suicide, and depression than any other occupation. Some of the stressors farmers must cope with are financial difficulties, time and workload pressures, the unpredictability of the agricultural industry, and detrimental weather events. What if anything can Extension educators and other agriculture professionals do to help farmers cope with these stressors? In this presentation, we would like to share with you some of the results of focus group sessions held with Wisconsin Farmers. In these sessions, we identified stressors, barriers to seeking help for mental and physical health and ways to overcome these barriers.
