Conference Name Helping Mitigate Financial Stress for Farm Operators and Family Members

John Shutske and Joy Kirkpatrick

Summary

This session is a follow-up to the 2017 pre-conference professional development workshop (in Cincinnati) on the negative impacts of farm stress. In this abbreviated session, we will explore the known impacts of ongoing, chronic stress resulting from poor economic conditions and other stressors. These will include: impacts on brain structure and function; decision making; physical health; injury risk; and, relationships. Ten, specific actions that an agricultural risk management educator or other "service provider" can take to help an individual or family member to mitigate the negative impacts of stress will be explored. We will also discuss new publications including a case study, a farmer/rancher guide to stress management to be used by participants in their work locally.
