Identifying Challenges and Issues Impacting Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers

Summary
This presentation will discuss issues and challenges that impact socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers (SDFR). The presentation will discuss the results of collaborative efforts between the Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center at Alcorn State University (Policy Center), other land-grant universities (1890 and 1862) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) representing SDFR related to identifying challenges faced by SDFR and proposing policy recommendations for addressing the challenges to improve the success of SDFR. Challenges to be discussed include access to capital, differences in payments for crop base acreages, and heirs property. Furthermore, this presentation will discuss the process for broadly engaging the 1890 land grant community and community–based organizations in preparing for Farm Bill 2023.
