Preparing and Delivering “In the Cattle Markets”
Since 2002, members of the Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) have produced a weekly commentary called “In the Cattle Markets”. The issues are generally released on Monday afternoons containing one to two pages of commentary and a summary table of major cash cattle and feed prices. We will share the process and logistics involved with writing and sharing a column with a national scope and currently nine different authors. Key advantages have been having a large membership for potential authors and the constancy of LMIC staff members that ensure the schedule is maintained and issues are posted and shared. The current e-mail list has 636 addresses.
The poster can show how the newsletter looks, how it is promoted, and what the archive looks like. The topic list is the primary aspect to be highlighted. The breadth and depth of topics reflect the broad geographical mix of the authors, differences of opinions and relevance of issues, and detailed knowledge of topics relevant to cattle price risk management. A word cloud will show the aspects that have been more common in recent years.
“In the Cattle Markets” is a complementary good and a key component of Extension programming efforts of LMIC authors and members. By itself, the issues do not change lives. However, the issues reinforce ideas, broaden the reach beyond an author’s territory, and educate more readers. Anecdotes of further reach of the issues will be shared.
