Conference Name Price Reporting: Farmer Education & Methods

Matt LeRoux

Summary

Part of the appeal of direct-to-consumer (DTC) marketing for farmers is that they are “price makers” instead of “price takers,” however; farmers express that price-setting is challenging and report low confidence in their prices. We’ll discuss Cornell’s recent price reporting efforts, including methodologies for collecting NY farmers market and local grocery store prices for monthly, online reporting. We’ll also review common price reporting methods, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each, and share how to get started in your region. Finally, we’ll review our education approach which has successfully increased farmer confidence and led many to increase prices.
