Conference Name Risk Management Education for Nebraska Livestock and Forage Producers Underserved by Crop Insurance

Elliott Dennis, Jim Jansen, and Jay Parsons

Summary

Over the last five years, the University of Nebraska conducted workshops focusing on educating cattle producers about federally subsidized crop insurance products. These 19 workshops, held from 2016 to 2022 impacting 373 producers, covered tools like Livestock Risk Protection (LRP), Pasture, Range, and Forage Insurance (PRF), and Annual Forage Insurance (AF). Producers were contacted to determine the long-run effects that educational programs had (a) on insurance use/non-use and (b) producer education. As a result of these education programs interview participants generally reported (1) making more informed decisions when determining whether purchasing insurance was a correct decision for their operational goals, (2) those implementing risk management tools consistently over time noticed the benefits the education provided in informing their decisions. These effects were generally more positive about the net benefit effects to their operation from PRF than LRP, and (3) the tools and information covered supported the resiliency and sustainability of their operation. The evaluation revealed several ways to improve the method of delivering programming and collecting, monitoring, and assessing their impacts through time.
