Strengthening Dairy and Livestock Viability Through Farmer-Led Cohort Education

Summary

As Extension education methods evolve to meet the changing needs of farmers, the UNH Extension Dairy and Livestock Team has implemented two farmer-led cohort programs from 2023 to 2026, one focused on calf and heifer management and another on dairy and livestock value-added production. One of these programs was funded by a Northeast Extension Risk Management Education grant.

Cohort-based education fosters a collaborative learning environment where participants learn from each other’s experiences rather than relying solely on traditional seminars or a single expert. These cohorts consist of small groups of producers who meet regularly with facilitation from Extension specialists. Facilitators provide a flexible structure to guide discussions when needed, while prioritizing participant-led conversations and peer knowledge sharing. This approach encourages organic brainstorming, fosters collaboration, and often expands learning beyond the initial topic.

Farmers participating in cohort programs demonstrate a high incidence of behavior change to improve farm viability. In a recent cohort, 100% of participants reported implementing a new management strategy to improve overall farm and personnel management. Additionally, 83% indicated they plan to maintain contact with fellow farmers beyond the program, demonstrating the long-term value of these relationships. Cohort-based programs not only enhance technical knowledge but also build community resilience and farmer confidence in decision-making.
