Conference Name Successful Small Farms Class: Eastern Panhandle Beginning Farmer Program

Emily Morrow

Summary

In the Eastern Panhandle of WV, the number of farms are increasing, but the average farm size is decreasing. More first generation farmers are entering into agriculture, and seeking out education from Extension when making important decisions on how to use their land without taking on debt.

The Successful Small Farms Course is a risk management program, with emphasis on goal setting and a self-evaluation of their time, infrastructure, skillset, and interests. Participants also visit other small farms for networking and hands-on learning. 100% of participants reported they chose a farm enterprise that aligns with the resources they have available.
