Farmland and agriculture in the northeastern states are facing enormous pressure from urbanization, regulation, and increasingly competitive markets. Conventional farming is becoming more and more unprofitable and inadequate for farm viability. On the other hand, urbanization and high population density of the region have created new opportunities for the farmers to enhance farm income. In response, farmers in the region are adopting new and innovative activities in addition to conventional farming in order to strengthen the farm financial situation. This study examines the income-generating potential of the non-conventional farm-related activities that have been adopted by New Jersey farmers.
