New Publication, AgDM B2-40, Understanding Cattle Basis
Basis is the difference between cash price and futures price. More specifically, it is the difference between today’s local cash price and today’s futures price of the futures commodity contract with maturity closest to the present time, also called the nearby contract. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME Group, www.cmegroup.com) is the major market place for livestock and crop futures prices. This was an old publication which has been completely re-written.
