Open in new window Planning and Adapting for Heat and Other Climate Impacts at Farmers Markets

Jim Simon ( 2024 )

Summary

Extreme heat and volatile weather due to climate change is affecting both farm operations and farmers markets' ability to serve their customers. Heat, drought, and flooding impact farm production, and also exacerbate pest and disease pressure. Extreme weather also presents safety issues to market participants, and affects shoppers’ ability and interest in going to farmers markets. With planning, market organizers can mitigate risks to market participants while still meeting their mission of connecting vendors and shoppers.
