Summary

Lesson 1: Becoming a Data-Informed Farmer—or as we say at TEAM Tilley, Why you need to learn to love your data. Farms are unique businesses with their own rules and financial considerations. Just as many corporations and small business owners use data to support better practices and a stronger bottom line, farmers also have an opportunity to use data to save time, spend wisely, manage risk and improve their bottom line. It’s important for farmers to become data-informed farmers and learn to use the farm financial numbers being generated year-to-year on their farm. Data-informed farmers should get in the habit of incorporating farm financial management into their seasonal farm operations. In this lesson we cover the following: • The difference between being data-informed and data-driven — Data doesn’t solve everything. Many factors go into your farming choices. Your farm’s data is available to help you make decisions, but it should not be the only thing driving your choices. • Data that is already growing your farm — What parts of your farm have the biggest impact on your profits? How can you leverage financial decisions to capitalize on your strengths? • Why becoming a data-informed farmer is important to your farm’s growth and success — Data-informed farming is about increasing profits and minimizing loss by making strong insurance choices and identifying areas that generate advantages or costs. • The types of financial data you need to understand — We will look at farm production data, crop insurance data and financial data. This includes everything from crop yields to tax information. • How being data-informed helps you make better decisions when operating your farm and managing your profitability— Understanding your farm’s data can help you make effective cost-cutting decisions and approach your annual processes with a focus on maximizing profits. • Seasonal process for farm data management— The courses in this series and the Tilley platform consider farm financial data as part of a seasonal process based on your key planning decisions.
