Summary

The Julian Samora Research Institute (JSRI) and Michigan Food and Farming Systems (MIFFS) collaborated on a project titled "Educating Underserved and Socially Disadvantage Farmers on Risk Management and Mitigation," which was funded by the North Central Extension Risk Management Education Center at the University of Nebraska. We present lessons learned from the project with a focus on small-scale Latino farmers in Southwest Michigan which aimed to assess awareness of a farm's risks and insurance options and the influence of five critical social capital motives in purchasing insurance. We discuss farmers' perceptions and understanding of the different types of insurance policies available and their experiences working with federally approved and private insurance providers. In addition, we discuss the views and experiences of different insurance providers working with small-scale farmers. The lessons learned are based on information obtained through personal interviews and focus groups with farmers, providers, and representatives from private organizations.
