Conference Name Using Humorous Videos to Safely Open Discussion About Farm Stress Topics

Maria Pippidis

Summary

Humor has always provided a largely acceptable means by which to hold ideas and life up to the light for inspection and critique. Similar to other art forms, humor is fundamentally about emotions and human connection, which makes it simultaneously risky and inviting; relatable and inexplicable.

Using humor and improvisation to address farm stress topics was the objective of a group of Extension professionals working under the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network in the Northeast. This group worked with professional comedians to develop three videos that raise awareness and identify strategies to mitigate farm stressors.

This poster session will review our findings from focus groups with extension professionals, provide a brief research review regarding the use of humor to address tough topics, outline the contents of the videos and invite participants to participate in an upcoming training session that will build confidence in using these resources.
