Conference Name Breaking the Burnout Cycle: Strategies for Personal and Professional Resilience

Charlotte Maxwell

Summary

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion resulting from prolonged stress and overexertion. It often manifests as feelings of helplessness, detachment, and a sense of lack of accomplishment. Burnout is a multifaceted issue that impacts personal and professional lives. Recognizing early signs is crucial to preventing long-term damage. Leaders play a vital role in preventing and mitigating burnout within their teams by fostering a supportive work environment, promoting open communication, and providing resources for mental health. Leaders are urged to lead by example, promoting a culture of balance to ensure their team's sustained productivity and satisfaction. I will cover practical strategies to combat burnout, focusing on self-care, time management, and seeking support for extension educators. I will also discuss the benefits of mindfulness and physical activity in reducing stress and promoting overall well-being. This is a presentation prepared by three agents: myself, Sarah DeBour from Iowa, and Kayla Wise from Ohio. However, I will be the only presenter attending. We have modified this presentation for Extension professionals and farmer groups, and I also plan to discuss strategies for integrating burnout topics into other risk management programs.
