Exploring H2A Farm Labor in the Mid-Atlantic Region
The national farm labor shortage issue has become prevalent in the early 2020's post Covid-19 for many different reasons. One of the most commonly requested educational outreach programs by agricultural producers in Delaware and Maryland is one that discusses the H2A program in depth. This project served as a multi-state extension outreach program in Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey and gave producers an overview on how the H2A program works and how to incorporate H2A workers within a farming business. Outreach materials and areas explored during the programs included an H2A real wage calculator for the cost of labor to be used in enterprise budgeting, a producer checklist for H2A program participation, a legal guide on the H2A process, considerations from each department of labor for each state, and how foreign workers are found for H2A visas.
