Conference Name Farm Succession Planning Focusing on Human Risks

Jesse Ketterman, Paul Goeringer, and Alex Chan

Summary

Extension has a history of providing workshops on retirement and farm succession planning. However, these workshops' practicality is limited to addressing family communication difficulties and not the human risk associated with farm business planning. Recent needs assessments of farmers in our state revealed that succession planning and family communication skills were top educational needs. At the same time, another survey indicated that 32 percent of respondents would attend a succession and estate planning program. Our state developed workshops to focus on communication, health insurance, retirement, and succession/estate planning. Communication focused on developing a greater understanding of conflict and understanding your approach toward conflict. Health insurance and retirement focused on health insurance operations for farm businesses and later life transitioning to Medicare and long term care options. Estate planning focused on understanding the different options available to transition business operations and assets. To increase the likelihood of retaining and implementing the knowledge gained during workshops, participants were offered one-on-one coaching regarding succession and estate planning with a certified Farm Transition Coordinator. This session will provide an overview of the workshop content and the feedback received from participants. Included in the discussion are the necessary tools to begin the succession planning process.
