Conference Name Retail farm marketing and agri-tourism: market, financial, legal and human resource risk management

John Berry

Summary

This session centers on a one year RME funded project that sought to build the risk management tool kit for those producers marketing directly to consumers. The project target audience markets both farm products and farm experiences as a significant source of farm revenues. Enhancing farm viability by managing risks associated with keeping customers, employees and visitors safe is the primary principle of this project. The initial step of this project was to gather known materials on the subject as a reference. Building on several previous projects, this effort introduced a series of single page, self-audit forms intended to identify the level of safety/risk at specific farm enterprises and provide insurance industry guidelines on enhancing direct-market and agri-tourism risk management levels. Through facilitated self audits and conversations on additional farm risk trouble spots – the project materials have been farm tested. These project materials are likely useful to many Extension risk management colleagues working with the growing numbers of agri-tourism farm efforts. Presentation participants will receive a full set of references and the self-audit series.
