Wind Turbine Lease Education Program
Ron Haugen and Dwight Aakre, North Dakota State University Extension Service
As a result of a Risk Management Education Grant, the North Dakota State University Extension Service provided an educational effort for land owners and producers considering signing wind turbine leases.
North Dakota has great potential for wind energy. Many wind farms are being considered and developed within the state. From 2008 to 2010, twenty-three workshops were held near potential wind farms in various locations and venues across the state. The total attendance was 972, which was double the expected attendance.
The objectives of the workshops were to educate participants on legal, liability and financial aspects of a wind turbine lease.
Wind energy contracts are a new development. Participants considering signing a wind turbine lease were exposed to information to help make a well-informed decision regarding legal and economic risk associated with signing a contract.
The presentation to the Extension Risk Management Education National Conference includes an overview of wind energy, a description of the workshops and a summary of the presentation materials. Educators in potential wind energy areas could use this information and develop programming for their own region.
