Small businesses in the U.S. face significant challenges, with nearly 50% failing within five years (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). To address these challenges, the University of Maryland Extension developed an entrepreneurial coaching program tailored to agricultural entrepreneurs, helping them identify goals, access resources, and take actionable steps to launch or improve their businesses.
Initially offered as one-on-one coaching, the program transitioned to a virtual format in 2018, leveraging WebEx and Zoom to provide flexible, remote support. In 2021, through a USDA BFRDP grant, the program expanded by onboarding eight additional coaches, implementing Client Relationship Management software, and offering extended coaching engagements of 6–12 months. To date, over 200 clients have been coached, with 92% rating the program as excellent. Participants reported increased clarity on next steps, such as developing business plans (57%), estimating production costs (43%), and conducting market research (36%).
Participant feedback highlights the program’s value in providing clarity, actionable steps, and personalized support. These results demonstrate the program’s effectiveness in fostering sustainable agricultural businesses and advancing Maryland’s agricultural economy.
